World Day Soil Day by AICRP on women in Agriculture on 05.12.2025

December 5th is celebrated every year as World Soil Day (WSD) to highlight the importance of healthy soil and promote sustainable management of soil resources. In December 2013, the UN General Assembly responded by designating 5th December 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.

Each year a different theme is given and the theme of World Soil Day 2025 is Healthy soils for healthy cities”. Soil nutrient loss is a major soil degradation process threatening nutrition and is recognized as being among the most important problems at a global level for food security and sustainability all around the globe.

AICRP on Women in Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad celebrated World Soil Day at Government High School, Thondapally (V), Shamshabad (M) with scientists Dr. Jessie Suneetha W, Dr. G. Swarupa Rani and Dr. Lakshmi Challa to high school teachers and school children. The scientists spoke about the influence of urban and rural soil health directly impacting city life by providing food, filtering water, regulating temperature and storing carbon, while solutions like green infrastructure, urban farming and composting combat threats like soil sealing and pollution to build resilient and green urban environments. It emphasized that vibrant cities depend on both fertile peri-urban lands and the often-overlooked soils beneath urban landscapes, requiring sustainable management and policy to support both people and nature.

Also, they emphasised on the need for decreasing single use plastics and encouraging the use of biodegradable counterparts, waste decomposing, careful disposal of perilous waste along with limiting the use of personal care products and substituting them with eco-friendly ones.
