Department of Soil Science

Soil is the ultimate source and sink of life. Our food begins from soil. Being the medium of plant growth, health of soil directly reflects on the health of society. Soils have to be healthy, fertile and sustainable to produce quality food for future generations. Soil is a biosphere with biotic and abiotic components of microbes, mineral and organic compounds. Soil science provides a deeper understanding of soils, their physical, chemical and biological properties which amalgamate to dictate soil health.  The department of soil science provides, knowledge essential for scientists for teaching, research and extension in soil science. Various branches of soil science viz., soil fertility, soil chemistry, soil physics, soil taxonomy, soil biology,  pollution, ecosystems, nano science cusped with knowledge of remote sensing and geographical information systems form the scope of the department responsible  for maintaining the health of the soil beyond present requirements.  Understanding the soil development, physico-chemical and biological properties is essential for successful and sustainable Agriculture. Providing teaching, research and extension leadership in applications of soil chemistry, soil physics, soil biology and pedology in the faculty of Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering is dealt in post graduate programme of Soil Science.
