Apparel & Textile Science

The Department of Apparel and Textile Science at Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU), Hyderabad, was established in 1983-84 as a prominent discipline within the College of Community Science. It provides an engaging environment that encourages students to explore, learn, and connect with the art and science of textiles. All faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees, ensuring advanced academic guidance and mentorship for postgraduate and doctoral students.

    The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including the Natural Dye Processing & Incubation Center and an ISO-certified Textile Testing Laboratory, which support research in areas such as natural dyes, functional and protective clothing, healthcare textiles, technical textiles, and eco-friendly textile production. Research initiatives have included value-added products from agro-based fibres, the utilisation of silk and polyester waste, garment design for differently-abled individuals, and the development of innovative textile finishes, such as organic nano-antimicrobial treatments. These efforts reflect the department’s commitment to advancing both scientific knowledge and practical applications in the textile and apparel sectors.

    Alumni of the department have secured diverse and distinguished career paths in academia, industry, research, and entrepreneurship. They include professors at NIFT at the national level, faculty members at premier fashion design institutes such as HAMSTECH, and Assistant Professors in central and state agricultural universities, including ANGRAU, OUAT (Odisha), Padmavathi University, UP, and Madurai. Graduates also serve as research associates, managers in design studios, supervisors in textile mills, and entrepreneurs establishing garment units, boutiques, and textile production enterprises. Additionally, several alumni hold positions in educational and governmental organizations such as PJTAU, TSWREIS, TMU, and KVK, making significant contributions to the textile and fashion sectors at both regional and national levels.

    Student Experiences

    I, Bhawana Sharma, completed my postgraduate studies in Apparel and Textile Science in 2024 at the Department of Apparel and Textile Science, CCSC, PJTAU. As an M.Sc. student in the Department, my experience has been immensely rewarding and enriching. The supportive and knowledgeable faculty members played a crucial role in shaping my academic and research path. Their constant encouragement, patient guidance and willingness to go the extra mile greatly impacted my learning and personal growth. The department is well-equipped with advanced instruments and tools, providing me with the perfect environment to conduct in-depth research. These facilities supported my academic projects and helped me explore new areas of interest and innovation. Overall, my experience at PJTAU has been memorable and transformative. The nurturing academic atmosphere, access to excellent resources, and mentorship from dedicated professors have prepared me well for developing an industry-relevant Ph.D research topic.

    I am M. Ramya, have completed my M.Sc. in Apparel and Textile Science from the College of Community Science, PJTSAU. My time at the Department of Apparel and Textile Science was highly enriching.
