  • Developing human resources and capacity building in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
  • The institute played a significant role in the release of varieties in rice, chickpea, black gram, green gram, soybean, safflower and sugarcane.

Key Research Themes / Focus Areas

  • Mapping and Gene Identification
  • Marker Assisted Breeding
  • Genetic Transformation
  • Tissue Culture
  • Genome Editing Etc.

Current Projects

  • Marker assisted breeding in chickpea: Identification of promising drought and heat tolerant genotypes for varietal    development in Telangana, India
  • Evaluation of high protein lines of chickpea for yield and suitability in Telangana growing areas
  • DNA Fingerprinting of crop plants
  • Molecular mapping of genomic regions associated with powdery mildew resistance in blackgram
  • Labs– 11 Nos; Seminar Hall– 1 No.; Classroom– 1No.; Office Room – 1No.; Staff Rooms– 3 Nos: Storerooms– 6 Nos; UPS Room- 2 Nos; Director Room– 1 No
  • Well-established Molecular Biology and Biotechnology labs and related equipment like PCR Machine, Gel Documentation System, Tissue Lyser, Nanodrop, Electrophoresis units, Water Purification System, Water Bath, Refrigerated Centrifuges, RT-PCR, Laminar Airflow etc., and complemented with field facility at College Farm. These facilities will be helpful for conducting the practicals of the Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Courses and also for undertaking PG and Ph.D. research work. Glasshoue and Nethouse facilities are also available
  • Rice Gene Pyramiding: Developed multi-disease–resistant lines combining Pi54 + Pi1, Xa21, xa13 + Gm4 for simultaneous resistance to bacterial blight, blast, and gall midge.
  • MAGIC Population Screening: Identified rice lines with broad-spectrum tolerance to brown planthopper, cold stress, and sheath blight; association mapping pinpointed 19 key SNPs.
  • Chickpea Drought Tolerance: Discovered and validated promising introgressed chickpea lines with enhanced drought resilience using SNP markers.
  • Vigna Viral Resistance: Advanced green gram (IBT GG 6) and black gram (IBT BG 15) entries displaying robust yellow mosaic virus resistance; mapped associated QTLs.
  • In Vitro & Transformation Platforms: Established reliable regeneration protocols for chickpea, green gram, and rice, and a chickpea transformation system for targeted gene transfer.
  • Variety Fingerprinting: Generated DNA-fingerprint profiles for university-released varieties and hybrids
  • (e.g., MBG 1070, KPS 6251, ADB eG2; maize hybrids BH417193/189/144) and for advanced minikit entries.
  • Bt Isolate Characterization: Isolated and molecularly characterized 10 Bacillus thuringiensis strains from Nagarkurnool cotton-field soils for potential biocontrol applications.
  • Cotton Jassid Resistance Markers: Identified 12 cotton genotypes with strong resistance to Amrasca biguttula biguttula and SSR markers (BL-1646, DOW-047) linked to jassid resistance.
  • Thrips Taxonomy & Phylogeny: Conducted morphological and mtCOI-based molecular characterization of thrips in Telangana, revealing Thrips tabaci and Scirtothrips dorsalis as dominant species and elucidating their genetic relationships.
